Day 2 Cold Water Classic Canada: Heats 1-4
Sunday October 10 North Chesterman Beach in Sunshine!
Peter Devries Finishes Second and Advances to Next Round!

Waking up to sunshine seemed a good beginning to a Tofino surf contest and sure enough the Cold Water Classic Canada was on! Grabbing a thermos of coffee, cameras, recorders and sunglasses, we were out the door and down to North Chesterman in plenty of time for the 9:00 am start. In Heat 1 local Malcomb Daly surfed well but couldn't come up with a top two placing so was eliminated. Top surfer (of the day as well) was Australian Jarrard Howse with a top score of 8.17/10.

Heat 2 was exciting for the crowd because last year's Cold Water Classic Canada and home boy favourite Peter Devries made his first appearance in the contest. It was a nail biter for Devries fans. Peter had a hard time in the heat and it looked like he just couldn't find those lefts that the others were clocking in on. But with minutes left, Peter found that wave with a big face and with a sweet vertical move, he made his dramatic finish. Was it enough we wondered? Yes it was and cheers went up as Peter glided into shore. Next we watched locals Shannon Brown and Raph Bruhwiler but although both surfers rode well neither came up with the scores to advance.

Listen to Peter Devries talking about his surfing in Heat 2.

Points for each waves are awarded out of ten. The top two wave scores are counted making the total score out of twenty. The top two surfers from each heat advance to the next round.
