Surf Lingo
You'll be hearing a lot of surf terms at the Cold Water Classic Canada - here's a crib sheet .
Alley-Oop: an aerial move where the surfer flies off the top of the wave and lands with a 180 or 360.
Backside: surfing with your back to the wave. Depends if you're& a regular or a goofy foot.
Barrel: space inside a wave when the lip curls to meet the face. Not a regular event in Tofino but sometimes.... Aka: tube.
Beach Break: waves break over a sandy bottom to create surf. Tofino is full of beach breaks.
Bottom Turn: the turn at the bottom of the wave sets up all moves to follow, vital for speed and direction.
Carving: deep turns, sinking part/all of the rail in a turn to slice up a wave
Climbing/Dropping: surfing up and down the wave face, to gain speed.
Closeout: a wave that breaks at the same time providing no face to ride.
Crest: we know you know, but just to be sure it's the top part of the wave. Aka lip
Cutback: a turn back towards the breaking section of the wave, classic move, brings surfer back to power area.
Dawn Patrol: early morning surfers enjoying waves before sunrise.
Deep Water: so deep that the surface is not affected by the ocean bottomography, ~ >1,000 feet.
Drop: beginning of the ride when surfers glide down the face.
Firing: sweet surf, surf that makes you quit work to get out and enjoy. Aka pumping, going off.
Floater: surfers rides along or over top of a breaking wave, then drops back down onto the face, like floating on the wave.
Frontside: facing the wave while surfing, opposite of backside.
Goofy: surfer who rides with their left foot at the back of the board, Yeah for goofys!
Hang Ten: longboard move where surfer hangs ten toes over front of board.
Hit the Lip: surfer turns board up to hit the lip of the wave which pushes the board back down, advanced move.
Impact Zone: line where waves are breaking.
Inside: takeoff position closest to the wave curl.
Kick out: surfer may end ride with this turn that cuts through or goes over the back of a wave.
Layback: surfers leans back off her board, usually in a barrel or during a cutback.
Macking: big waves going off, from Mac trucks.
Offshore: wind that blows off the shore towards the ocean, usually good news.
Onshore: wind that blows on to the shore from the ocean.
Pigdog: positioning yourself low and grabbing the rail of a surfboard, when backside in a barrel.
Pop-up: popping up onto your feet once you've caught the wave.
Rail grab: crouching to grab the rail to control board; aerials, in barrels.
Shredding: high energy surfing with rocking moves.
Slotted: sweetly positioned in a barrel under under a wave curl.
Snapback: staying in the power part of the wave with using rapid, short cutbacks.
Stall: letting the power of the wave catch up by slowing down the board.
Straightening off: surfer turns towards beach, used at end of wave.
Tail slide: very difficult move where surfer breaks fins free from water so tail zips around.
Tombstoning: post-wipeout when surfer is deep under water and tip of surfboard sticks up in air like a...
Unstuck: surfer separating from the wave or the board
Trim: surfer and board riding across wave at speed that maintains position on wave.
Waiting for the scores to drop: waiting to hear scores from the judges
Wipeout: we all know this term don't we!
The CWCC Announcers Rock The Lingo
The announcers are great at the Cold Water Classic throwing out surf lingo that you'll understand right away because it's so descriptive. If you can't remember the fun surf terms here are a few we noticed.:
"Looking at some suction in front of him..."
"Throwing spray and making it rain..."
"Smashing it off the top and throwing buckets..."
